The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance
- Alan Watts
I just finished the week in Milan for Design Week (aka Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano) where +250,000 descend on Italy for all things furniture and design.
It was a really fascinating week. I tagged along with a group of wonderful people in the orbit of the Design Exchange of Toronto (Canada's Design Museum) including my Dad.
I sorta at times felt like I was in outer space. It was a chance to immediately be immersed in whole world (aesthetics, beauty, design) that was outside of my own. The chance to just dive in participate. To talk to those from this world about their lives, their goals, how they ended up on their desired path. Many of these people had wide eyes for independence and creativity and that felt like a tasty reinforcement for doing my own thing. Crazy people with crazy visions make it feel ever more ok to be non-linear with my life.
Addendum: I wrote this in April. I had just attended Design Week in Milan. So many of the same feelings are permeating my brain today nearly half a year later. As I try to work through new things, and struggle through them the best reinforcement that I'm doing the right thing is when I chat to someone who is on the nonlinear journey. Whether they are struggling or succeeding, its incredibly energizing to feel like I'm part of a movement in the right direction. An empowering, creative, and boundary-less pursuit.
